Puerto Morelos Now

Puerto Morelos is the main port of the Mexican state of Quintana Roo and head of the homonymous municipality. It is located in the north of the state, 33 km south of Cancun. Together with Leona Vicario and Alfredo V. Bonfil, he was one of the three delegations that made up the municipality of Benito Juárez, but as of 2011 he raised his rank to the level of mayor, a decentralized and auxiliary body in the administration of the municipality. On November 6, 2015, the decree was published with which it was emancipated from the Benito Juárez municipality with head in Cancún, to become the eleventh municipality of Quintana Roo. The decree came into force on January 6, 2016 and a Municipal Council was installed, while the first city council was elected, which took office on September 30, 2016 with Laura Fernández Piña as the first municipal president. Its fishing activity is important and it has facilities for the industrialization of fishery products, an Industrial Park in the process of development and tourist facilities are currently being built, the growth of this last industry being one of the most important activities. Its reef (declared a national park) is part of the second largest barrier reef in the world, and is only 500 m from the beach. Ideal for diving, windsurfing and snorkeling among other marine activities. To the south of the entrance of the town there is a botanical garden (sanctuary of the Mayan jungle) of 65 hectares in which you can enjoy flora and fauna (spider monkey, coati) of the region, to the north of the entrance find a small zoo that houses boas, ocelots and crocodiles of all ages as the main attraction.
